Career Article 113:
Networking on the Golf Course

By Peter Dowling, JD, CPRW, ARM, CPCU

Is business is really happening on the golf courses? The deal may not be made on the golf course, however the relationships that lead to the deals are made on the course.

We are drawn to people that are similar to us. Women complain about the "good old boys club", and discrimination. Sure, it exists. However, some of it can be attributed to people wanting to be with those they are comfortable with.

We can improve our chances for success, and by broadening our network.

By stretching ourselves to be more knowledgeable in a wider variety of subjects, and participating in a variety of activities, we increase our networking community. More people are attracted to us and want to spend more time with us.

Golf is a great choice for a new activity. In many industries, it is common for regular golf outings and annual tournaments. If you are not a player, you're left out of that important bonding that occurs during the game. Out of sight, out of mind.

You may say, "I've never played golf before. I'll look like an idiot." That's OK, there are many tools and resources to get you on your way. It's a game of life long learning and improvement, so you won't get there overnight. You don't need to play evenly with your associates to build a relationship with them, and enjoy their company.

Some women say, "I don't need to act like a man to succeed in business." I'm not suggesting that you act like a man, or do anything that you are uncomfortable with. If you are uncomfortable, you'll seem false and you won't gain much from the experience.

Go ahead, give golf a try. Try it for fun, and to build your networking community.
